The AI build-out: the largest capex cycle in history — and the first crack in expert conviction
The AI infrastructure build-out is physically real — a stack of chips, memory and power being poured at a pace the experts we track compare to rebuilding the entire computer industry. But this is a synthesis of what they said, not our own market call, and the news in the signal is the rate of change: for the first time our panel's conviction is coming off the boil. AI capex slid from Very Bullish to Bullish this cycle (−29), semiconductors −39, and frontier labs −21 (small sample, n=21 — read with caution) — even as datacenter power stayed pinned Very Bullish. The fight is no longer "is AI real." It's who is financing the build, and whether the capacity gets lit up and paid for — a genuine super-cycle versus a Global-Crossing-style financing story.

What's happening
Spending on AI infrastructure has gone from a technology story to a macro-scale construction project. Jensen Huang (NVIDIA) framed it on June 16–17 as "reinventing the computer for the first time since the 1964 IBM System/360 — over the next 10 years we'll build tens of trillions of dollars of new computers to replace 60 years of old infrastructure." Jordi Visser called it, on June 15, "the largest capex cycle humanity will ever see… there is almost no way this isn't a super cycle." Andrew Feldman, on All-In (July 10), put the scale in deliberately startling terms: "data centers in the next several years will use more power than the previous 50 years on Earth."
And yet the panel we track is no longer euphoric. Our topic-sentiment read — the proprietary rate-of-change signal that is the point of Synthos — has AI capex dropping from Very Bullish (net 71) to Bullish (net 42) this cycle and semiconductors from Very Bullish (69) to Bullish (30). Both still lean bullish; both moved hard. The cooling isn't a demand scare — it's discipline creeping into the trade: Anthony Pompliano (July 4) calls it "a volatile mid-cycle consolidation and multiple-compression, but earnings stay great"; Darius Dale (July 6) calls the chip pullback "a healthy reset, not AI cracking… capex discipline elongates the build-out." The one layer that didn't cool at all is power.
What it actually is — and why the stack matters
Visser's shorthand, borrowed from Huang, is a five-layer cake, and his repeated point is that "the winners of the AI build-out are the bottom three layers — energy/power, chips, and AI-factory infrastructure — not the application/model side." Read from the ground up, that's the whole investable map:
Why it matters: this is a stack where the bottleneck keeps moving down. As Visser puts it, "bottlenecks only require more spend… they concentrate capital into that issue." When GPUs were scarce, money flowed to chips; now that racks sit waiting for interconnects and megawatts, capital rotates to memory, then to power. That rotation, not a single stock, is the through-line.
Where the experts agree
Beneath the noise, the voices we track — bulls and bears alike — converge on three things:
- • Demand is real, and it is being used. Even skeptics concede the usage. Huang's direct rebuttal to the dot-com analogy (Nov 6, 2025): "this is NOT a dot-com bubble — unlike dark fiber then, nearly every GPU today is lit up and used." Pies has inference growing 40% a month. The disagreement is about financing and returns, not adoption.
- • Power is the binding constraint. Chips, memory, models — all of it dead-ends without electricity. It's the one AI-stack topic our signal keeps at Very Bullish, and the one place bulls and builders don't argue.
- • The value accrues low in the stack. Energy, chips and infrastructure — not the crowded application layer — is where Visser's 100-name basket "has outperformed the S&P significantly this year," and where Lyn Alden calls chipmakers "the real AI bottleneck… a no-brainer segment," while cautioning that after 5–10x moves "prices can overshoot and pull back."
Where they really disagree — super-cycle vs. financing story
This is the live fault line, and it is not about whether AI works. It's about whether the build-out is a self-funding secular cycle or a debt-and-narrative bubble that overbuilds capacity the way the late-'90s telecoms overbuilt fiber. Both sides are named, dated, and quoted.

Where it stands, where it's going
Multiple-compression and volatility in the leaders, not a demand break. Chips digest a "healthy reset" (Dale); memory names like Micron sell off on good numbers as the bar resets (Visser: "Micron selling off on blowout earnings was the high"). Power/cooling names see the least turbulence. Watch NVDA Q2 FY27 (Aug 26) and MU Q4 FY26 (Sep 22) as the near-term referendums.
The bottleneck migrates from GPUs to interconnect, memory and power. Vera Rubin ramps drive optical (Marvell); HBM stays short into 2028; datacenter power is the layer capital rotates into. This is also the window where the bears' thesis gets tested: does cloud revenue actually follow capex on Pal's ~18-month lag, or do returns disappoint at the marginal neocloud?
Huang's "tens of trillions over 10 years" versus Green/Bianco's Global-Crossing overbuild. If demand compounds and capacity gets lit and paid for, the bottom-of-stack compounders keep winning. If financing tightens — a private-credit accident (Snider) or a concentration unwind — the marginal, most-levered builders are where it breaks first.

What we're watching (the falsifiers)
- Does cloud revenue follow capex? Pal's ~18-month lag is the bull's testable claim. If hyperscaler cloud/AI revenue doesn't inflect on schedule against the capex already spent, the bears' "returns never show up" case gains the high ground.
- The private-credit channel. Snider locates the real risk in shadow-bank financing, and our Private credit topic is already Very Bearish. A forced-selling event there would hit the levered builders (CoreWeave-type balance sheets) long before it touches NVIDIA's.
- Are the GPUs still lit? Huang's whole rebuttal rests on ~100% utilization. Any credible evidence of idle "dark GPUs," collapsing token prices, or falling inference volumes (Pies has it +40% MoM — watch that number) would validate the Global-Crossing analogy.
- Power delivery, not chip supply. If data centers stay stuck at ~30% built because megawatts and interconnects don't arrive, the bottleneck — and the returns — stall regardless of how many chips ship.
- Does our conviction keep cooling? −29 on capex and −39 on semis in one cycle is a drift, not a reversal. If next cycle deepens the slide or flips a bottom-of-stack layer (power) off Very Bullish, that's the panel telling us the story is changing.
